Progress Continues on Wildlife Gardens

Since reopening to the public on June 27, 2025, after a $1.9 million transformation, the Wildlife Gardens at Lake Erie Nature & Science Center has provided engaging learning experiences about native animals for thousands of visitors of all ages.
“Our visitors are enjoying the new outdoor exhibits of the Wildlife Gardens completed in Phase 1,” says Board President Zach Stephens. “The Board of Directors is happy to announce the beginning of Phase 2 renovations thanks to the generous support of our community.”
Beginning in Summer 2026, Lake Erie Nature & Science Center will further enhance experiences for our visitors and care for native wildlife with Phase 2 of the Wildlife Gardens Education and Renovation Project. A Mammal Exhibit will be the primary feature of Phase 2 and will be located adjacent to the Aviary. Offering visitors up-close views of native mammals such as fox, opossum, or skunk, the Mammal Exhibit expands on connections with species found in our local landscape.
The Nature Center will build on its high standards of wildlife rehabilitation with a Wildlife Quarantine Area created inside and adjacent to the wildlife barn. This innovative space will provide additional safeguards for the health of rehabilitation patients, personnel, resident animals, and the visiting public. The Quarantine Area will support current quarantine procedures for avian species such as screening new arrivals, monitoring patients, and other important protocols for wildlife rehabilitation. The Nature Center continues to exceed industry guidelines with these structural advancements while ensuring safe, high-quality treatment for ill and injured animals.
A Children’s Garden will provide a natural area for hands-on exploration within the Wildlife Gardens. Designed for young learners and families, this feature will encourage visitors to make lasting connections with nature and build a lifelong passion for discovery.
The cost for Phase 2 of the Wildlife Gardens Education and Renovation Project is $1,000,000. Approximately 80% of the funds are raised as of June 26, 2026. As an independent nonprofit organization, Lake Erie Nature & Science Center relies on donations and grants to support day-to-day operations in addition to capital improvements. Renovations are funded with donations from the community, foundation grants, and corporate contributions, in addition to a capital appropriation from the State of Ohio.
