April 22, 2022 is the 52nd Earth Day!  Here at Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, we treat every day as Earth Day. It is important to take time and reflect on our wondrous blue orb and the care it needs to be healthy. The theme of this year’s Earth Day is “Invest in Our Planet.” It takes all of us to preserve and protect our health, and our livelihoods, by practicing environmental stewardship each day.

Did you know that Lake Erie has one of the highest concentrations of microplastics in the world? Of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie is the fourth largest in surface area and the smallest by volume which makes it a gathering place for many of our discarded plastics. Beach clean-ups are one of the many steps we can take to protect our lake. To celebrate Earth Day, Lake Erie Nature and Science Center is partnering with Sierra Club Ohio, Bay Village Green Team, and BAYarts to clean up trash from Porter Creek and Huntington Beach on Sunday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Participants will clean up Huntington Beach and the trails surrounding the waterfront. To register, please visit Sierra Club Northeast Ohio’s page. The group will gather at Lake Erie Nature & Science Center, where a display table will also be available for visitors to learn more about how they can protect Lake Erie.
