Bird-Friendly Windows Project

Each year an estimated 550 million birds in the United States die due to window collisions.

Lake Erie Nature & Science Center is working to reduce these fatalities by applying bird-friendly window solutions at our facility.

Window collisions are most commonly caused by the reflective characteristics of glass. Migrating birds may see their environment reflected in windows, mistaking them for an extension of the sky and trees in their habitat.

We want to help prevent window strikes by applying high-contrast Feather Friendly window solutions to the exterior windows of Lake Erie Nature & Science Center. In addition to helping the migratory birds in our park setting, this project will also serve as an educational opportunity for the 100,000+ visitors who enjoy free admission to the Center each year!

We are $3,000 away from our goal of raising the $15,000 needed for the product and installation, thanks to the generous support of individual donors and organizations. Please consider making a donation toward our Bird-Friendly Windows Project. Together we can continue to make strides in protecting native wildlife.

About the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Program

Lake Erie Nature & Science Center’s wildlife education and rehabilitation program provides human assistance to ill and injured animals with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. Our wildlife rehabilitation facility is the only one in Cuyahoga County, and is operated by professional staff under rules and standards of federal, state, and local permits.

Annually, our wildlife specialists treat more than 2,000 animals and provide education to more than 7,000 people through phone and email inquiries about wildlife. Wildlife education and rehabilitation services are offered 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at no charge to the public.

Lake Erie Nature & Science Center is a partner and lead rehabilitator in the Lights Out Cleveland initiative which aims to protect migratory birds and reduce collisions with buildings by advocating for less illumination during peak migration season.
