New to our programs?  Come discover the wonderful world of Girl Scouting at Lake Erie Nature & Science Center!  Tour our facility, meet our resident animals, and see the stars in our planetarium.  This free evening is open to leaders who have never attended a program at our Center.

Each troop represented will be entered in a drawing for a FREE Girl Scout Day program in the 2009-10 program year!  Space is limited and pre-regisration is required.

Daisy Girl Scout Easter with the Animals

Start your road trip with the new Journeys program, Between Earth and Sky. Travel around our Center to learn about Easter animals that are native to Northeast Ohio (and often found hopping around your backyard!). Make an “Easter basket” for the wildlife (and yourself!), find out how others work to protect our planet and discover how YOU can make a difference! Each girl receives a light snack and program patch.

For Friendly and Helpful,  the resident animals at the Center will guide your Daisy Girl Scouts to think of the best ways to care for Nature’s Creatures. Learn respect for all creatures through a hands-on activity that fulfills Respect Myself and Others. A light snack is included and program patch (not Petals) are included.

A hands-on recycle activity teaches responsibility for the environment and earns the Responsible for What I Say and Do petal. A light snack and program patch (not Petals) are included.

Meet live animals and hike the forest trails to discover how plants and animals live together in their environment. See the earth below and the sky above as we explore the natural physical world.  Get a hands-on lesson about soil erosion using our cool stream tables.  Become a geologist and make and take home a "rock."  Look up to the sky to study the shapes in clouds and observe the creatures of the air.  Earn the Earth and Sky Try-It as we explore the wonderful world of earth science!

Our inspiring badge programs provide all the materials, instruction and activities necessary for your troop to complete the Try-It.  The Try-It insignia is included in the badge program fee and is presented at the end of your visit.

Pitch your tent in beautiful Huntington Reservation and get excited about outdoor camping as you earn your Ready, Set, Go Camping Try-It! Learn how to tie knots with bandannas you get to keep, how to “roll” your sleeping bags and how to pack the right camp clothes. Make your own “trail mix” to take on a discovery hike. Learn how the stars can help you find your way at night and meet wildlife you may see while camping. Make a sit-upon to take on your next camping trip. In inclement weather, program moves indoors.

Brownie Girl Scout Backpacks: Eco-Explorer Try-it Backpack
Date: April - November
Time/Duration: Minimum recommended time: 1 hour
  Brownie Girl Scouts (Gr. 2-3) Fee: $6/scout (no minimum)
Learn about our local animal habitats! Explore the eco-wonders around our Center, make a food chain, decode a habitat word scramble and learn to help wildlife found in your backyard.

Our all inclusive backpacks provide all the materials, instructions and activities necessary for your troop to complete the Try-It.  The Try-It insignia is included in the backpack rental fee and is presented at the end of your visit.  Adults must leave a driver's license during checkout and the backpack must stay at Lake Erie Nature & Science Center or Huntington Reservation.

Experience the past by playing pioneer games, hiking through John Huntington’s Estate, making pioneer food, learning pioneer skills and listening to stories from old.  Your Listening to the Past Try-It is included in this exciting, time-traveling experience!

This overnight includes a snack, continental breakfast, craft, Try-It and take-home materials.

Troop registration is taken on a first-come, first-serve basis and space is limited.

Are you a city slicker? We’ll show you how to connect to the great outdoors right in the city. Identify outdoor activities that you and your friends can enjoy in the city. During a night hike, find out what kinds of animals live in the city and which birds pass through urban areas as they migrate. Play outdoor games and build a kite you can take home to fly. Make your evening snack with help from the sun, create art inspired by nature and take home your Outdoors in the City Badge.

Session 2 - Wildlife Badge:

Get wild about wildlife! Discover the mascots and symbols of Ohio. Imitate birds by investigating which tools best help them survive. Learn what makes each animal group unique, focusing on reptiles and mammals. Become a field scientist and use a journal to explore, observe and document the plants and animals in our Wildlife Garden or Exhibit Hall. Live animals, mounts, indoor and outdoor activities are all included.

You will also make and test-flight your very own model airplane in this fun-filled space adventure!! If weather permits, we will explore the night sky through a telescope.

Session 1:  Earth Connections Badge
Become an ecologist and discover life within your own “mini-park.” Identify the trees within Huntington Reservation and unearth their connections to our early settlers. Let the rings of a tree tell you the story of its life. Play a game of Bat and Moth to learn how the two animals depend on each other. Get the inside story on how some of the animals came to be residents here and learn how the Center rehab program helps injured wildlife.
 
Session 2: Rocks Rock! Badge
Explore the rocks and soils along Porter Creek and the trails above as you learn about the rocks in Northeast Ohio!  Discover sand from a “beach” that surrounded a glacial lake, dig in the soil, follow the path of erosion, learn the 3 main types of rocks and search for different rocks on a hike through Huntington Reservation. Become a paleontologist, uncover fossils and make some fossils to take home. Program includes a moderate hike.

Transform yourself into an out-of-this-world Junior Astronomer inside the Walter R. Schuele Planetarium and earn your Sky Search Badge.  Use a star map and locate constellations.  Listen to stories told long ago about the pictures in the stars.  Learn why the North Star is so important and what planets we can see in the night sky.  Touch real meteorites and plan the best time to have a meteorite-watching party!  Step outside and explore the night sky through a telescope.  If weather does not permit telescope viewing, enjoy other fun activities!

Advance registration is required for all Girl Scout programs.

Become an Ecologist and discover the life within your own “mini-park”. Discover the differences in all those trees that live within Huntington Reservation and learn how to identify them and understand their relationship to our early settlers. Use our stream tables for a hands-on demonstration about soil erosion, a common and powerful force of nature. Pretend you are a spider as you weave webs of thread into fantastic geometric shapes. Get moving and discover the science in everyday exercise. See how math and science relate to ordinary life as we talk to a female medical professional about the ways she uses these subjects in her work. “Rock along” on an indoor geology walk, identify living creatures using a field guide and earn your Science in Everyday Life Badge.

Create a game that illustrates your understanding of our animal world.

Earn the Why in the World Interest Project Patch as you use science to study life. Explore the weather, question how something works and investigate a cutting edge synthetic material. Visit with our resident rock expert and master minerals. Learn the chemical properties of food and prepare a recipe that involves a chemical reaction. Discover what manufactured parts can be implanted into the human body and research the materials used to create artificial body parts. Identify three women scientists who have won the Nobel Prize. Develop a game for girls in an after-school program.
